in this workshop, s.f. calligraphy teacher dave goggin will introduce a beautiful and versatile style from the Golden Age of american calligraphy - spencerian Bold.

spencerian Bold is great for titles, invitations, certificates, greeting cards, quotations, and elsewhere for a unique, elegant, and cultured look.  As with classic Spencerian, you can even do Spencerian Bold with a pencil.  You might even find that Spencerian Bold is easier than classic Spencerian in some ways!

Building on the letter forms and geometry introduced in the 2-part basic Urban Bazaar calligraphy workshop, this workshop will cover the shade patterns, letter form adjustments, and techniques for writing in Spencerian Bold style.  The workshop will include much individual attention and emphasize pen control, bio-mechanics, and letter spacing.  We'll also expand on the flourishing concepts a bit to enhance fancy capitals.   Once again we'll be using the pointed pen in an oblique pen holder - the unique contributions of Western civilization to world calligraphic art.

All workshop tickets are non-refundable.  The fee includes an extra pen point, exemplar sheets, and practice paper.

in the second session of the workshop, we’ll turn our attention to spencerian style writing itself. building on the skills and techniques learned in the first session, we’ll explore the letterforms, and how to connect them into actual words and sentences.  along the way you’ll learn how to apply the concept of the bio-mechanical landscape to letters and words, and how it can help you write more comfortably and accurately; the basic letter shapes and, just as important, the underlying geometry of basic spencerian script letters, both capital and small; simple methods that can help you achieve even slant, size, and spacing (these skills are absolutely key to having your writing look polished and professional); and an introduction to the variety of pen points and pen holders available.

create gorgeous flowers inspired by historical irish crochet. we'll use a variety of yarn weights, textures, and colors to crochet modern versions that can be worn as pins, clips, and boutonnières. this workshop is designed for students who have beginning or higher crochet skills. if you are comfortable with holding yarn (tension), chaining, and single crochet, you'll be able to learn new stitches and enjoy flower making. we'll have written and graphic instructions for each flower too so if you are more advanced and looking for some new patterns, you can dive right in.
all materials are provided; if you have fun yarn you would like to use, feel free to bring it!  -wine will be available (to anyone of legal drinking age) should anyone want to sip some while learning this new craft.  feel free to bring a bottle of your favourite, or enjoy ours!
